What Is Ironing-On (Flocking)?

Ironing-on, or flocking, is a process where a design, picture, or text made from a special vinyl called flex is applied to fabric (or even leather). Under the heat and pressure of an iron, the flex fuses into the textile for a professional-quality finish.

This technique ensures sharp colors and clean edges, a smooth texture with a slightly raised effect, and long-lasting durability. Unlike printed t-shirts that fade quickly, iron-on transfers withstand multiple washes without losing color.

Iron-on transfers work best for solid colors (one to three colors) and are ideal for designs, logos, and text rather than complex images with gradients. The result of a DIY transfer applied with an iron is nearly identical to that of professional flocking.
